A mother and child recover from malaria in a hospital in Burundi. The Government provides free health care for pregnant women and children under five.

The young Burundian mother with her child on the morningÕs ward round declares that they are both feeling much better now. Malaria, TBC, HIV/AIDS and typhoid belong among the most frequent diseases affecting the adult and child Burundian population in this area. Despite the insufficiently developed and poor health system in Burundi, a certain progress has been recently recognized, presented in particular by free health care for pregnant women and children under age 5, decreed by the President in 2006.
